Step-by-step instructions
Ask: "Are you choking?" If they cannot cough, speak, or breathe — act fast.
Stand behind them. Wrap arms around waist. Make a fist above navel, below ribs.
Grasp fist with other hand. Pull inward and upward sharply. Repeat up to 5 times.
Do not slap the back if the person is standing upright and conscious.
If object does not dislodge, call 112 and continue thrusts.
If person becomes unresponsive, lower to ground and start CPR.
Key Warnings
- Do not perform blind finger sweeps in the mouth.
- Do not give water or food to a choking person.
