DEVELOPMENT FIXTURE — Pick up the child — crying upright on your lap often improves mild croup.

DEVELOPMENT FIXTURE — For mild cases: sit in steamy bathroom 10 minutes OR brief cool outdoor air — see if breathing eases.
DEVELOPMENT FIXTURE — If not improving or any danger sign — call 112.
DEVELOPMENT FIXTURE — Keep child calm with quiet voice and gentle rocking.

REALITY: DEVELOPMENT FIXTURE — Most cases are mild, but airway swelling can become life-threatening. Blue lips or stridor at rest means call 112.
DANGER: DEVELOPMENT FIXTURE — Assuming all barking coughs are mild overnight croup.
DEVELOPMENT FIXTURE — Croup is swelling around the voice box in young children, usually from a virus. It causes a seal-like barking cough.
DEVELOPMENT FIXTURE — Swelling can progress and block the airway — watch for worsening noise when breathing in (stridor).
