Scene hazards: Falling while alone, Unable to unlock door for responders
DEVELOPMENT FIXTURE — Dial 112 immediately and put the phone on speaker — even if you cannot talk, dispatch may hear distress and trace location.
DEVELOPMENT FIXTURE — Try forceful coughing if any air is moving.
DEVELOPMENT FIXTURE — Move toward a door and unlock it if you can do so quickly without leaving the phone.
DEVELOPMENT FIXTURE — Self abdominal thrust: Make a fist with one hand. Place it above your navel, below your ribcage. Grasp the fist with your other hand and pull sharply inward and upward. Repeat up to 5 times.
DEVELOPMENT FIXTURE — Chair method: Lean over the back of a sturdy chair or counter edge. Press your upper abdomen firmly against it and push upward repeatedly.
DEVELOPMENT FIXTURE — Alternate methods until the object flies out or you cannot continue.
DEVELOPMENT FIXTURE — If you feel faint — try to position yourself where you will not hit your head when you fall.
DEVELOPMENT FIXTURE — Call 112 first on speaker. Leave the line open — operators are trained for silent distress calls.
DEVELOPMENT FIXTURE — If you have smart home or medical alert devices, activate them if possible.
DEVELOPMENT FIXTURE — Bang on walls or floor if neighbors are nearby after calling.
DEVELOPMENT FIXTURE — If you become unconscious, bystander CPR is your only hope — calling 112 early gives responders a head start.
DEVELOPMENT FIXTURE — After self-rescue succeeds, still seek medical care — internal injury or leftover fragments may remain.
DEVELOPMENT FIXTURE — Do NOT run outside for help if you can call from inside — you may collapse in the street.
DEVELOPMENT FIXTURE — Do NOT drink water to wash the object down.
DEVELOPMENT FIXTURE — Do NOT give up after one or two attempts.
MYTH: DEVELOPMENT FIXTURE — If you are alone and choking, there is nothing you can do
REALITY: DEVELOPMENT FIXTURE — Self abdominal thrusts and pressing over a chair back can dislodge the object. Calling 112 on speaker may save you even if you pass out.
DANGER: DEVELOPMENT FIXTURE — People give up instead of fighting for their life.
DEVELOPMENT FIXTURE — Something is blocking your windpipe. You have very little time before you lose consciousness if the blockage is complete.
DEVELOPMENT FIXTURE — Do not leave your home to find help if you can call from where you are — you may collapse on the way.
