Civilian Emergency Platform
DEVELOPMENT FIXTURE — A pregnant person or someone who is very overweight is choking and cannot breathe — abdominal thrusts may be unsafe, so use chest thrusts instead.
DEVELOPMENT FIXTURE — NOT EXPERT REVIEWED — NOT FOR PUBLIC DISTRIBUTION
DEVELOPMENT FIXTURE — Universal choking sign — hands at throat, cannot speak.
DEVELOPMENT FIXTURE — Silent struggle, lips turning blue, panic.
DEVELOPMENT FIXTURE — Pregnant person in later pregnancy — protect the belly during any maneuver.
Scene hazards: Fall if standing unsupported, Crowded panic
DEVELOPMENT FIXTURE — Confirm severe choking — they cannot speak or cough effectively.
DEVELOPMENT FIXTURE — Shout for someone to call 112.
DEVELOPMENT FIXTURE — Lean them forward and support their chest for back blows.
DEVELOPMENT FIXTURE — Back blows: Up to 5 firm slaps between the shoulder blades.
DEVELOPMENT FIXTURE — Chest thrusts: Stand behind or beside them. Place hands on the center of the chest (same spot as CPR). Pull straight inward sharply up to 5 times — not upward into the belly.
DEVELOPMENT FIXTURE — Alternate 5 back blows and 5 chest thrusts until the object is expelled or they collapse.
DEVELOPMENT FIXTURE — If they collapse — carefully lower them and start CPR. For pregnant persons, if CPR is needed, a slight left tilt may help but do not delay compressions.
DEVELOPMENT FIXTURE — Call 112. Say: "Pregnant person choking" or "Person choking — using chest thrusts."
DEVELOPMENT FIXTURE — Mention pregnancy weeks if known.
DEVELOPMENT FIXTURE — Stay on the line — operator will guide you.
DEVELOPMENT FIXTURE — Pregnant choking victims need hospital evaluation for both airway and pregnancy after any rescue.
DEVELOPMENT FIXTURE — Even after successful rescue, medical check is needed — ribs, airway, and pregnancy status should be assessed.
DEVELOPMENT FIXTURE — Do NOT use standard abdominal Heimlich thrusts on a pregnant person — use chest thrusts.
DEVELOPMENT FIXTURE — Do NOT press on the pregnant belly.
DEVELOPMENT FIXTURE — Do NOT assume chest thrusts are too weak — they can still dislodge the object.
MYTH: DEVELOPMENT FIXTURE — Pregnant people cannot be helped if choking — you might hurt the baby
REALITY: DEVELOPMENT FIXTURE — Chest thrusts and back blows can save both lives. An untreated airway blockage is fatal for mother and baby.
DANGER: DEVELOPMENT FIXTURE — Rescuers hesitate and both lives are lost.
DEVELOPMENT FIXTURE — The same airway blockage as any adult choking episode, but standard abdominal thrusts could injure a pregnant abdomen or may not reach effectively in a very obese person.
DEVELOPMENT FIXTURE — Complete blockage still causes unconsciousness within minutes — modify technique, do not delay.
