# What We Can Do About Freeze Response in Emergencies

A companion piece in this library examines _why_ people freeze under acute stress. This article asks a different question: given that freezing is common, what can housing societies, schools, employers, and platform designers do about it _before_ the event?
The answer is not "tell people to stay calm." Calm is an outcome of good defaults, not a prerequisite for action.
Replace open decisions with scripted defaults

Default scripts reduce branching:

Drill for one skill, not twelve
Full-scale disaster drills have value but high organizational cost. Micro-drills — ninety seconds to locate extinguisher, practice drop-cover-hold, walk assembly route — provide motor and spatial memory without annual production.

Environmental pre-loading

Technology: reduce lookup under stress

Voice interfaces may help when hands are busy — but only if answers are reviewed, short, and regional.
Social permission to act
In some contexts, bystanders fear legal liability or cultural impropriety (touching strangers, removing clothing for AED pads).
