# The Problem With Emergency Signage That Nobody Reads

Walk through any office corridor and count green exit signs. Now ask colleagues where the nearest stairs are. The mismatch reveals a design problem masquerading as public negligence.
Compliance visibility ≠ cognitive visibility
Building codes often specify sign _presence_, luminance, and mounting height. They less often specify comprehension under smoke, panic, or low literacy — or sequential guidance through complex paths.
ISO 7010 registers standardized safety pictograms precisely because text-heavy signs fail multilingual and stressed populations [ISO 7010 registered symbols]. Yet many local installations add dense paragraphs in small English type — readable in inspection photos, useless at 2 a.m. in power failure.
Banner blindness in buildings
Users filter constant background stimuli. Signs that never change become architectural noise — the same mechanism as web ad blindness. Rotating seasonal preparedness strips (monsoon flood arrow, heatwave hydration point) can legitimately refresh salience without novelty gimmicks.
Wrong sign, wrong place
Common mismatches:
- Assembly point sign inside lobby but not at outdoor gathering spot

- "In case of fire" booklet inside glass box nobody opens
Signage must match decision points — where direction is ambiguous — not only where regulations tick boxes.
Stress shrinks readable text

Photoluminescence and maintenance debt

Digital cannot replace physical
QR codes to emergency guides supplement; they do not replace luminous exit direction when phone batteries die or hands are helping injured persons. Physical-first, digital-second remains the correct hierarchy for evacuation paths.
Recommendations for facility managers
- Walk evacuation paths at night without torch — note failure points.
- Remove obstructed signs rather than adding new ones elsewhere confusingly.
- Pair every prohibition ("no lift") with affirmative direction ("stairs →").
- Test with actual residents/workers: "Without looking, point to assembly."
- Treat signs as consumables with replacement schedules, not permanent fixtures.
